tabletop

Provided below are a few small tabletop projects I worked on, to better understand the process of transitioning mechanics from a physical limitation to a digital medium, as well as being able to test digital game concepts quickly with physical protototypes.

The Dark Planet

Designers: Jonathan Marchand, Samuel Ford, Justin Foland, Scott Walters, Shawn Currey

Development Time: 1 Month

Tasks: Served as Team Lead, helped conceptualize map design using hex cell layout, wrote story concept, designed end game “calamity” cards that depicted end game scenarios for players. Designed resource cards, accident cards, and buff cards, as well as version testing.

The Dark Planet was a board game created between myself and fellow students Jonathan Marchand, Scott Walters, Justin Foland, and Shawn Currey in a team we named Terra Incognita. In it, space explorers have crash landed on a bizarre planet. They must work together to collect resources to repair their ship, while avoiding and dealing with issues on the planet, and avoiding a great calamity soon to come. Feel free to check out our manual for the prototype below!

Field of War

This was my first foray into creating a tabletop game, and I chose a square tile based board made out of presentation board, and named the game “Field of War”. A simple concept, two players with two sets of armies, to place within their field range utilizing terrain for benefits, and then battling the enemy player to kill the king. The players would have damage ratio sheets to represent the interactions between all units, and would be a battle of numbers and placing of troops. Several play tests allowed introduction of new units and editing strategies. A fun project, one that I would have liked to add detail with physical pieces.

Tim's Immunity Takes Initiative

Designers: Samuel Ford, Jonathan Marchand, Timothy Harvey, Dean Cruz, Brian Roberts, Adam Leisinger

Development Time: 1 Month

Tasks: Designing concept map flow and core objectives for game, turn based actions, mechanics for reinforcement, card mechanic designs, version testing.

This was a board game project with the intent to be digital, created between fellow designers Dean Cruz, Jonathan Marchand, Timothy Harvey, Brian Roberts, Adam Leisinger, and myself. Tasked to create a board game that would focus on mechanics, and we decided to use a hex cell map to represent a war between white blood cells and virus infections within a poor sap (namely our pal Timothy).  We created a rough example of the game, and included printable pieces within our game manual. If you’d like, feel free to check out our manual, and our Youtube video pitch for the game presented by me!
